Mitur seals agreement with four airlines to increase Canadian arrivals by 20%

Dominican tourism authorities signed four agreements with an equal number of airlines, which dominate the flow of passengers from Canada to the Caribbean, to increase the number of seats available on their flights by 15-20%.

The agreements were signed between the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, and representatives of the airlines Air Transat, Air Canada, Sunwing Airlines, and WestJet during the Trade Show Miami 2024, a tourism exhibition fair held by Mitur in Miami at the JW Marriot Marquis Hotel.

“When we make these agreements, we ask the airlines to add more seats to the Dominican Republic, and they can tell you. And if I run out of seats, well, we tell them that Dominican will back you up if that happens. But the seats are filling up, and the demand is growing. That is why Canada is an extremely important market for our country,” said the minister.

Collado also signed an agreement with Voyage en Direct, an online travel agency based in Quebec, Canada. It offers a variety of travel and tourism-related services, including booking flights, hotels, vacation packages, cruises, car rentals, and tourist activities.

He explained that in 2023, 1.1 million tourists arrived in the country from Canada, and he expects that after these agreements, the figure will increase to more than 1.25 million Canadians in 2024.

He indicated that, for this reason, the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) is seeking to consolidate this market and is strengthening all agreements with airlines, travel agencies, and tour operators.

Air Transat is a Canadian airline based in Montreal, Quebec. According to Hoy, the new 2024 agreement estimates a projection of 500,000 passengers.

Agency agreements
Other agreements were with Expedia, a global online travel company offering a wide range of planning services; Signature Travel Network, a network of luxury travel agencies operating globally; Internova Travel Group, a travel agency, and tourism-related service provider; and Virtuoso Travel, a network of luxury travel agencies and high-end tourism service providers worldwide.

In addition, agreements were signed with Despega Travel Agency, a leading online travel company in Latin America; Price Travel, an online travel agency and tour operator based in Mexico; El Corte Inglés, which is known for providing customer service in the travel industry; WestJet, a low-cost airline based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and JetBlue, a U.S. airline focused on offering affordable fares.

At the beginning of the negotiations, Collado said that more than 30 agreements were signed through 1,100 meetings scheduled and held between representatives of 70 Dominican companies, considered the most significant tourism operation ever in Florida.

Hundreds of tour operators from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and other Latin American countries participated in the event, which has become an attraction for those involved in the tourism sector.

Cabo Rojo prepares to receive its second cruise

Santo Domingo.- Jean Luis Rodríguez, the executive director of the Dominican Port Authority (Apordom), announced that the province of Pedernales is gearing up to welcome the arrival of the second cruise ship through the Cabo Rojo port on Monday, April 8.

The vessel, named Nieuw Amsterdam, belonging to Holland America Line, has a capacity for up to 2,106 visitors and 929 crew members. They will have the opportunity to explore a range of ecological destinations in the province and the Enriquillo region.

Rodríguez emphasized the significance of cruise passenger traffic for Pedernales, attributing it to the visionary leadership and commitment to the country by President Luis Abinader.

Additionally, Rodríguez confirmed that Puerto Plata, Samaná, La Romana, and the National District will welcome hundreds of tourists this April, arriving on 67 high-level cruise ships.

According to Apordom’s report on port activities, from April 1st to April 30th of this year, Taíno Bay, Amber Cove, Sans Souci Tourist Terminal, and Catalina Fondeadero I will host foreign visitors, stimulating the economies of these regions.

The arrival of ships commenced on April 1st with vessels like the Norwegian Prima, Carnival Venezia, Norwegian Escape, and Adventure Of The Seas. The list includes upcoming arrivals such as Nieuw Statendam, Liberty Of The Seas, MSC Seascape, Carnival Horizon, Carnival Vista, Caribbean Princess, Explorer Of The Seas, Valiant Lady, Carnival Mardi Gras, Celebrity Apex, MSC Meraviglia, among others.

The data presented corresponds to the projected calendar of port and cruise anchorage impacts for the Dominican Republic in April 2024. It is noted that certain variables, such as changes in cruise routes, weather conditions, and other factors, may result in adjustments to the schedule.

Las Américas Airport reopens after repairing “hole” in runway

Santo Domingo.- The Las Américas International Airport (AILA), José Francisco Peña Gómez, is operating normally after the repair of the asphalt detachment on runway 17-35 that caused its temporary closure.

The information was offered by Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom), through a publication on its account on the X platform, where it indicated that since 12:35 a.m. today, Monday, April 8, all flights at AILA have been taking place without incident.

Likewise, the entity thanked “everyone for their understanding in this extraordinary situation.”

It should be noted that the “hole” in the runway as mentioned above caused delays in the arrival and departure of flights. Several flights had to be diverted to alternate airports.

Banreservas: Punta Bergantín hotels to boost Puerto Plata tourism

Santo Domingo.- Samuel Pereyra, the administrator of the Banreservas, highlighted the significance of a new hotel chain’s commitment to Puerto Plata, expressing optimism that it will revitalize tourism in the northern region. Following an agreement with the Dominican Republic, the hotel chain is set to commence operations in Punta Bergantín.

The project entails the development of a hotel with 300 rooms and a water park, with an investment totaling US$209 million dollars, as reported by Nuevo Diario.

Dominican Republic secures promising agreements at Miami Trade Show

Miami, US.- The Trade Show organized by the Ministry of Tourism culminated in Miami, sealing 42 agreements between tour operators and travel agents from both the Dominican Republic and the Americas. These agreements are expected to usher in more than 4 million tourists throughout the remainder of the year.

Notable among the agreements is the collaboration involving Punta Bergantin in Puerto Plata, which brings together the Karisma and Hyatt hotel chains with support from Banreservas. Puerto Plata to welcome 52 cruise ships in April

Puerto Plata.- Atahualpa Paulino, the Northern Regional Director of Tourism in the Northern zone, has announced that Puerto Plata will welcome a total of 52 cruise ships during April 2024.

This influx of cruise ships solidifies Puerto Plata as one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Caribbean, according to Paulino. “Out of these 52 ships, 22 will dock at Amber Cove, while Taino Bay will receive the remaining 30, showcasing the capacity of both ports to accommodate a large number of cruise passengers,” he stated.

Paulino emphasized that Puerto Plata, known as the Bride of the Atlantic, is fully prepared to receive these visitors at its tourist ports of Amber Cove and Taino Bay.

“The steady stream of tourists arriving on cruise ships not only highlights the beauty and allure of this destination but also underscores the significance of the well-established tourism infrastructure in the region,” he explained.

Air transport prices in the Dominican Republic jump 16.3%

Santo Domingo.- In February of this year, air transport prices surged by 16.3%, as reported by the Services Sector Producer Price Index (IPP Services). This index tracks price variations for a range of domestically produced services and serves as a gauge for changes in the cost of commercial flights and the transportation of goods to and from the country.

Over the past 12 months, prices in this sector have seen a notable increase of 28.96 points, rising from 177.58 points in February 2023 to 206.54 points in February of this year.

This upward trajectory has persisted into 2024, with air transport emerging as the primary segment within the services sector experiencing price hikes in February. Compared to January, prices in this category surged by 10.33%, with the indicator climbing from 187.21 points to its current level.

On a year-on-year basis, air transport ranks as the second economic activity witnessing the most substantial price increases over the past 12 months, trailing only behind postal and courier activities, which saw a surge of 18.50% compared to February of the previous year.

Following air transport, rental and leasing activities experienced a notable uptick, rising by 14.70% compared to 2023, as indicated in a report from the National Statistics Office (ONE).

Puerto Plata Mayor’s Office reopens the doors of Paseo de Doña Blanca

Puerto Plata – Roquelito García, mayor of Puerto Plata, reopened the doors of the Paseo de Doña Blancas (Callejón Rosado) after several days of work to rehabilitate and maintain the tourist attraction.

Hotels, bars and restaurants increased 10.6% in February 2024

Santo Domingo – The Central Bank of the Dominican Republic (BCRD) reported the preliminary results of the economic activity of last February 2024.

Hotels, bars, and restaurants showed an inter-annual variation of 12.8% in February of this year, accumulating an expansion of 10.6% from January to February 2024.

This remarkable performance was largely supported by the arrival of passengers by air, which reached 1,498,061 tourists. Together with the reception of 602,985 cruise passengers, this totaled 2,101,046 visitors in that period.

Likewise, the consolidated credit portfolio directed to the sector increased by 12.5% compared to February 2023.

The monthly economic activity indicator (IMAE) registered an expansion of 6.2 % during February of this year, higher than the 4.6 % observed in January, thus accumulating an average year-on-year growth of 5.4 % in the first two months of 2024, continuing with the growing trend that the economy has been exhibiting in recent months.

Finally, most economic activities registered a positive performance in the first two months of 2024, except Mining, whose 15.9 % drop is explained mainly by the cessation of operations of the ferronickel extraction company since December 2023.

Likewise, the slowdown in the gold and silver extraction process has affected the activity’s performance due to the readjustment plan of the facilities required for the continuity of the mining activity in the country’s main deposit. This process is expected to normalize in the next few months of this year, regularizing production levels.

Puerto Plata: Mitur and hotel sector expect to receive 50 thousand visitors

Puerto Plata—The North Coast is preparing to receive the thousands of vacationers who choose to spend the Holy Week holiday in the area. Hence, authorities of the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) said that Samaná, María Trinidad Sánchez, and Puerto Plata to Montecristi are working on conditioning and cleaning algae from the main beaches.

In addition, they placed a security system and a large staff as part of the actions undertaken by the Mitur and the hotel sector because they estimate that about 50,000 people could visit the coastal towns from Thursday to Sunday.

A total of 1,000 police and military personnel will be deployed for security.

Carlos Atahualpa Paulino, northern regional director of Mitur, said that in the province of Puerto Plata alone, 22,800 people are expected to visit.

He indicated that during the Semana Mayor, Puerto Plata’s more than nine thousand rooms are all full, and 12,800 visitors from different countries are expected to arrive only by air.

In María Trinidad Sánchez, 10,000 visitors are expected to visit its beaches and resorts, and another 7,000 in Montecristi.

The official informed us that on five beaches of Puerto Plata, such as Cofresí, Pueblito, Camacho, and Costa Rica on the boardwalk, and Sosúa, they are working on the placement of towers for the safety of bathers.

“In the case of the beach cleaning, it is a work that we do permanently together with the hotel businessmen of this area,” Paulino told elCaribe.

Meanwhile, the provincial governor of Puerto Plata, Clariza Rochet, informed that 12,800 travelers and another 48,000 cruise passengers are expected to arrive by air through the two terminals, Amber Cove and Taíno Bay.

The Executive Branch representative said they are working with the emergency, mitigation, and response committee to organize the Easter Week operation. The area’s businessmen hope that the presence of thousands of Dominicans visiting the Dominican Republic for domestic tourism will boost the economy.

Meliá Hotels International and CEPM inaugurate solar park

Punta Cana.- The Paradisus Palma Real hotel and the Punta Cana-Macao Energy Consortium (CEPM) have officially inaugurated a photovoltaic plant, boasting 901 solar modules and an installed power capacity of 500 kWp. In its first year of operation, the plant is projected to produce an estimated 791 MWh of energy, resulting in the avoidance of approximately 560 tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to 465 barrels of oil.

Francisco Camps, the Area General Director of Meliá Hotels International in the Dominican Republic, emphasized that this initiative aligns with the commitment of the Meliá Hotels International Group to environmental protection. He stated, “We view sustainability as a crucial tool for leaving a positive legacy on our planet and society, achieved through responsible resource management with the goal of continually reducing our CO2 emissions.”

Camps further highlighted the significance of the alliance between Meliá Hotels International and CEPM, a leading energy company in the Dominican Republic. He praised CEPM for offering new energy solutions that contribute to sustainable development, particularly in regions such as Punta Cana.

Safety measures implemented for beach-goers in Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata, DR.- The Civil Defense in Puerto Plata has downgraded flag placements on the beaches of the Atlantic coast from red to yellow. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of beachgoers, allowing swimming in designated areas at various beach resorts where security measures and lifeguard supervision are in place.

As conditions improve along the coastal areas of Puerto Plata, with dangerous waves subsiding, Whascar García, Director of Civil Defense, reported waves measuring 4 to 5 feet, accompanied by moderate winds and slightly irregular marine currents in deeper waters of the Atlantic Zone.

García emphasized the potential for sudden changes in wave and wind patterns, underscoring the need for vigilance among beach users to avoid potential risks to their lives. “We anticipate better conditions tomorrow, and thankfully, we have had no incidents to regret during the initial phase of operations,” stated García.

High demand: Iberia expands Easter flights to Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic emerges as one of the top destinations for Iberia Airlines during the Easter 2024 period, driven by several factors, including the surging demand from Spanish travelers who consistently favor the Caribbean island as a prime long-haul destination.

British diplomats interested in Cabo Rojo tourism development project

Pedernales, DR.- A delegation from the British Embassy, led by David Rutley, Minister for the Americas and the Caribbean of the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office of the United Kingdom, alongside the UK’s ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Mockbul Ali, recently visited the Tourist Development Project in Cabo Rojo, Pedernales.

Joined by Sigmund Freund, Executive Director of the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships (DGAPP), and representatives from the Pro-Pedernales Trust, the diplomats toured the construction site of the project’s first hotels, receiving detailed updates from the engineers overseeing the construction.

The itinerary included visits to the cruise port and the Cabo Rojo Nursery, which stands as the country’s first conservation program for endemic and native species. This initiative was launched by the Pro-Pedernales Trust prior to the commencement of civil works on the project.

The diplomats had the opportunity to admire the ecotourism beauty of Cabo Rojo and its rich biodiversity during a boat tour from La Cueva to Bahía de las Águilas.

Sigmund Freund, DGAPP’s Executive Director, emphasized that the visit by British Minister David Rutley and Ambassador Mockbul Ali signifies strong support for the initiatives spearheaded by President Luis Abinader, not only within the Cabo Rojo project but nationwide, for the benefit of Dominicans.

Minister David Rutley expressed his admiration for the project, pledging to support the Dominican Government’s efforts in tourism development in the Southern region by encouraging British companies to engage in the project.

The cactus conservation project underway, along with the nursery, ensures the preservation of important plants and cacti for future generations.
