Masks are now optional on major US airlines

After a federal judge in Florida struck down the Biden administration’s mask mandate for airplanes and other methods of public transportation, airlines are beginning to act.

For this reason, several US airlines announced that masks are now optional on their planes: Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and JetBlue.

Delta Air Lines said it will make masks optional and warned travelers “may experience inconsistent application over the next 24 hours as this news is communicated more widely.”

“Given the unexpected nature of this announcement, please note that customers, airline employees, and employees of federal agencies, such as the TSA, may receive this information at different times,” the airline said.

Meanwhile, United Airlines said that “masks are no longer required at United on domestic flights, select international flights (depending on arrival country’s mask requirements), or at US airports.”

For its part, Alaska Airlines stated that masks are now optional and asked passengers to be considerate.

“While we are pleased that this means many of us can see your smiling faces, we understand that some may have mixed feelings,” the airline posted.

“Remember to be nice to each other and that wearing a mask while traveling is still an option,” he added.

American Airlines said, “face masks will no longer be required for our customers and team members at US airports and domestic flights.”

Please note that face masks may still be required depending on local ordinances or when traveling to/from certain international locations depending on country requirements.

Alaska Airlines said some of its passengers barred from the airline during the mask policy would continue to be barred from its planes.

Southwest Airlines, meanwhile, said on its website that employees and customers can “choose whether they’d like to wear a mask, and we encourage people to make the best choice to support their personal well-being.”

It also said it would “continue to support the comfort of those traveling with us by offering additional layers of protection.”

And JetBlue, through a tweet, stated that masks would be optional within the United States. “While no longer required, customers and crew members can continue to wear face coverings in our terminals and onboard our aircraft.”

Meanwhile, Amtrak said it would no longer require face masks for passengers and employees on the ground.

It is recalled that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention extended the mandate to use masks until May 3. The masking requirement was applied to planes, trains, and other forms of public transportation. A Biden administration official says the order is no longer in effect while the ruling is reviewed.

Hidalgo: “Dominican Republic is one of the few countries that are already almost normal”

Highlights increase in hotel occupancy in the DR

He sees isolation measures as currently unnecessary.

“When this (from the covid-19 pandemic) arrived, I remembered that Jesus Christ rose on the third day, but I thought that the country would take three years to be as we were before. There are a few countries that are already established, that are already normal, and one of the countries that is almost normal is Santo Domingo . It will cost other countries much more”, indicated the president of GlobaliaJuan José Hidalgo.

When Hidalgo cites Santo Domingo, he refers specifically to the country. It is common for it to occur when foreigners and tourists travel to the national territory.

“Without a doubt, SD is an example. There, what is always talked about is that you have to push forward. That many tourists come, and that we are almost normal. It is a country that is facing difficulties,” said the businessman in an interview with El Caribe.

He stated that the type mentioned above of progress, work, and effort gives people confidence, and that is expressed in an increase in hotel occupancy and a good frequency of entry and exit of airline flights, as is the case of his company ( Air Europa ), which goes daily to Santo Domingo and two days a week -now in winter- to Punta Cana.

“The planes are full. So I think that openness and how the government has dealt with this pandemic are very important,” he explained.

For Hidalgo, the isolation measures, due to the health situation in the world, are no longer necessary because they are very drastic for the tourism economy.

Full hotel for Easter will boost the economy of the East

Great expectations in hotels in Punta Cana and Romana-Bayahibe

They expect a high flow of local vacationers

The interest of tourists to vacation in the next few days of the Easter 2022 holiday means that the local hotel industry is emerging with outstanding occupancy levels in the country’s main tourist centers, as is the case of Punta Cana and Romana-Bayahibe.

In this sense, the president of the Association of Hotels and Tourist Projects of the East ( Asoleste ), Ernesto Veloz, told arecoa.com that this area will have 90% occupancy and that, even if the occupational data is not handled in property rental service platforms such as Airbnb, the segment mentioned above in the East will lead the tourist region to have 100% visitor accommodation.

«The arrival of visitors and tourists to the area is shaping up to be very good and so far there are rooms that will obviously fill up as the days go by. The area will be filled by Airbnb rentals, so there will be a spillover to the local economy,” he added.

And without leaving aside the recent information from the head of the Mitur on the regulation of platforms with the characteristics of Airbnb, Veloz expressed his support for this measure since he understands it is unfair competition.

Meanwhile, Andrés Fernández, president of the Romana-Bayahíbe Hotel Association ( AHRB ), reported that the area expects to have an occupancy rate above 90%.

“In general, the entire country is shaping up very well because in addition to the good times the sector is having at an international level, the local market also takes advantage of days off to vacation, so occupations are normally high, and this year will not be the exception,” he added.

Cab drivers will operate from Uber app

The digital mobility platform Uber and cab drivers associations in the Bávaro – Punta Cana area signed an agreement to allow them to affiliate with this platform and offer their services in hotels.

The agreement that puts an end to two years of disputes and negotiations was signed by Uber, the Dominican Confederation of Tourist Taxi Drivers (Codotatur), and associations affiliated with this entity: Verón Taxi, Asotatupal, and Siutratural, and in a pilot project will include 4,500 cab drivers in that area, who can now be activated as driver-partners in the Uber app or application with the new “Uber Select” option.

Uber’s public affairs manager for the Caribbean, Central America, and Andean, Sylvia Alvarado, explained that Uber Select would be the only option available in the app with which driver-partners will be able to pick up users at hotels in the Bávaro -Punta Cana area, exclusive to Codotatur cab drivers.

But the UberX option will continue to be available as before, but outside the hotels. The Minister of Tourism, David Collado, said that this would allow it to offer better services to tourism and leverage its growth.

Statements

Santiago Zamora, president of Codotatur, expressed that “It fills us with satisfaction that after several months of meetings, it has been possible to formalize this alliance that allows us to access the platform and its cutting-edge technology to increase our opportunity to generate higher profits. We are pleased with this alliance for the development of transportation in the Dominican Republic, which together we will be able to promote even more.

The Minister of Tourism, David Collado, said he was more than satisfied with the signing of the agreement, as it is the result of long months of work and dialogue.

“Today, with this agreement, we give a beautiful example and make it clear that consultation, dialogue and strategic alliance are the key to unity to ensure the safest and most efficient cab transport service to our tourists in the Eastern region and throughout the country,” said Minister Collado.
