Dominican economic recovery ‘a success story’

Santo Domingo.- The economic recovery achieved by the Dominican Republic in the face of the health crisis generated by the coronavirus has been labeled a success story by the international community, highlighting the opinions of the most prestigious risk rating agencies, the most prestigious institutions representatives of international banking and various multilateral organizations.

November 2021 registered an improvement of 197% over the same period of 2020, 12% higher than November 2019 and even 7% above November 2018.

In addition, it was highlighted that 73% of the non-residents received from January to November 2019 had been recovered.

It is followed in the top 10 of the country’s leading airlines: American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Copa Airlines, Air Europa, Frontier Airlines, Condor Flugdienst Gmbh, and Iberia.

American Airlines managed to transport 1,401,773 passengers, Delta Airlines, 952,709, United Airlines 920,623, Spirit Airlines, 426,701, Copa Airlines 414,470, Air Europa 191,832, Frontier Airlines 190,932, Condor Flugdienst Gmbh 157,271, while Iberia moved 138,816.

When analyzing passenger traffic up through November, the Civil Aviation Board ( JAC ) indicates that the three main airports in the country: Punta Cana, Las Américas ( AILA ), and the Cibao International Airport, together mobilized 980,045 passengers in November 2021, equivalent to 89% of the total.

The Punta Cana International Airport was the busiest with 3,597,045 passengers, followed by AILA with 3,443,001. The two airports represent 75% of the total passenger traffic to/from the Dominican Republic.

One of the largest cruise ships in the world “Odyssey of the Seas” arrives in Puerto Plata

The Taino Bay Tourist Port located in Puerto Plata received today, December 30, the “Odyssey of the Seas,” considered one of the largest cruise ships in the world belonging to the Royal Caribbean company from Fort Lauderdale.

In November 2021, 519,349 tourists arrived in the country, 197% more than in the same month of 2020.

The arrival of the Carnival Mardi Gras and Carnival Liberty ships probably makes Puerto Plata the first tourist center to receive more than 10,000 cruise passengers in one day in Dominican history.

Passengers are affected after flight cancellation

Guzmancito II Wind Farm to be built in Maimon PP

The Dominican State, represented by the National Energy Commission (CNE), and the Poseidón Energía Renovable company signed a contract to construct the Los Guzmancito II Wind Farm, located in the Municipal District of Maimón, in the province of Puerto Plata.

The Executive Director of the CNE, Edward Veras, said that the Los Guzmancito II Wind Farm would have a generation capacity of 50 megawatts and produce dozens of jobs in the area.

Veras indicated that the definitive concession contract for the installation and operation of the wind farm was authorized by President Luis Abinader through Special Power of Attorney number 86-21, dated December 17, 2021.

Veras signed the contract together with Ernesto Elías Armenteros Calac, for the Poseidón Energía Renovable company.

He recalled that on December 22, 2020, through resolution CNE-CP-0022-2020, the CNE granted a provisional concession in favor of the company Poseidón Energía Renovable, SA, to carry out studies related to the construction, installation, and commissioning service of the generation work from primary sources of renewable origin of wind energy.

It added that on March 3, 2021, the petitioning company filed with the CNE a request for a standard concession for the construction and operation of an electrical work called “Los Guzmancitos II Wind Farm,” with an installed capacity of up to 50 MW.
In a press release, it indicated that on the 7th of this month, through Resolution CNE-CD-0011-2021, the entity proposed and recommended favorably to the Executive Power to grant the enabling title and the signing of a definitive concession contract with the Poseidón Energía Renovable company, for the construction, installation, operation, and start-up of the project called “Los Guzmancito II Wind Farm.” Furthermore, he specified that the contract with the company to produce wind energy, to be located in Maimón, Puerto Plata province, has 25 years, counted from the date of signing the final concession agreement.

The largest water park in the Caribbean is being built in Cap Cana

 They project the opening of the macro project for the year 2023

In a ceremony held with the presence of the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, and the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, the construction of the El Dorado Park water park was formally started, which will be developed in Cap Cana with foreign investment from the businessman. Carlos Cobiella and GAM Capital, the leading investment fund manager in company development funds.

El Dorado Park will be the largest and most advanced water theme park in the entire Caribbean.

The complete project will have three phases to be developed in an area of ​​115,000 square meters and its opening will be for the year 2023. The executive director of the Airport Department assured that, due to the considerable volume of travelers, for this week alone, about a thousand flights have been scheduled, through the airports of Las Américas and Punta Cana, respectively.

Víctor Pichardo made the revelation after leading this Monday at the Las Américas terminal, the reception ceremony for Dominicans living abroad. They come to spend Christmas with their family and friends.

Pichardo announced that, for this month, despite the coronavirus pandemic that the world is experiencing, it is expected that some 400,000 Creoles living in the United States, European countries, and from other destinations will come to the country to spend Christmas Eve and New Year.

The official praised the facilities that the government of President Luis Abinader has granted this year through the Customs Directorate, to increase from US $ 3,000 to US $ 4,000, to bring merchandise and gifts without paying the corresponding taxes.

“Never ever like now, no government had taken more into account like the one presided over by Luis Abinader, those brothers who make extraordinary efforts to come to the country in December to be with their family and friends,” said Víctor Pichardo.

Scheduled
The director of the Airport Department said that some 597 flights had been scheduled by the Punta Cana Airport and another 390 by Las Américas to make seats available due to the considerable displacement of absent Dominicans.

About the health protocols established by the Public Health authorities at the Airports, Pichardo assured that the body he directs acts as a regulatory body for compliance with health measures against the new variant of Covid-19, known as omicron.

“I want to signify that we as a country have been recognized and are a benchmark nation with regard to the health controls that we have established in all the country’s airports,” said the airport official.

The official offered this information at the head of the reception ceremony for the Dominican living abroad on his day every December 20, amidst great uproar from travelers, who enjoyed the music of a typical ensemble.

Also present at this event were the general director of Dominican Airports Siglo 2l (Aerodom), Monika Infante de Henríquez, the Director of Migration, Enrique García and Major General Carlos Febrillet Rodríguez, head of CESAC, among other officials.

The arrival of non-resident foreigners to the Dominican Republic reached 349,379 tourists at the end of October 2021, representing an increase of 25.9% compared to the previous month and 18.7% compared to October 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.

The data, contained in the Sectorial Panorama report of the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development corresponding to October 2021, reveal that the number of tourist cards sold experienced a monthly increase of 5.8% and 15.9% compared to 2019, in line with the increase in passenger arrivals.

Regarding the nationality of the tourists, 28.9% were Americans, with 6,000 more visitors from this origin compared to September, and the arrival of Russian visitors (26.40%), Canadians (9, 10%), French (8.35%), and Germans (3.59%).

According to the Tourist Intelligence System (Situr), the open hotel occupancy rate increased 3.9 points compared to last month, being Sosúa – Cabarete (north), with 5.8 points, Bávaro-Punta Cana (east), with 5, 1 and La Romana – Bayahíbe (east) with 4.7 points, which show the highest employment growth.

This translates into more than 236,000 formally employed persons in the last 12 months and of 25,727 formal workers concerning September, figures representing the total recovery of the persons who were left out of the system in April and May 2020 due to the pandemic.

The report states that, so far this year, the number of formal workers registered a variation of 10.7 % (204,000 additional employed persons), dynamics explained by the activity of hotels, bars and restaurants, commerce, and other services.

According to the report, Trade also recorded an increase, which puts the total deflated sales at 16 billion pesos (about 281.74 million dollars), which represents a rise of 12.4 % compared to October 2020 and of 5.8 % concerning October 2019, exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

In the agro-livestock sector, the production volume of agricultural goods decreased by 23.1 %. However, exports corresponding to this segment grew by 4.5 % compared to October 2020, with a nominal value of $55.2 million.

Also, there was a monthly decrease of 8.3 points and 10.1 % year-on-year in industrial manufacturing. However, exports of this item amounted to 122.5 million dollars, with a year-on-year increase of 21.3 %, the document states.
